People, by & large, are decent
I’ve said this once and I’ll say it again: people can seem so obnoxious and mean and unapproachable… until you say hi to them. This mindset has gained me so many great friendships throughout my life. I don’t lead with my ego or assumptions or even about what I heard about someone to dictate my judgement. I’m a firm believer in gaining firsthand knowledge of someone’s character. It’s freeing to make your own judgements, and often times a missed opportunity to mindlessly adopt other people’s judgements. If I am ever at a social event and come across someone who seems a bit stuck up, instead of being offended that they’re unfriendly and are looking down on me, I go up to them and strike up a conversation. I will say this works better than with people who are loud and bubbly (although I am often times guilty of being loud and bubbly). The next time you feel repelled by someone’s external image (i.e., what they choose to show the world), go up to them and say …
